A board buddy/mentor can be a helpful resource for newly appointed directors, particularly those serving on their first board, by offering an experienced guide to help navigate the complexities of corporate board service. This trusted adviser can help create a smooth transition into the boardroom by providing insights into board history, dynamics, culture and director expectations; by sharing valuable knowledge; and by facilitating introductions with other board members and management. In guiding the new director, a board buddy/mentor helps ensure that the new director is well prepared to engage meaningfully in discussions and decision-making.

Typically, the nominating/governance chair, with input from the nominating/governance committee, determines if a mentor is appropriate for the new director and, if so, seeks to find a match for the new director.
